Fresh Nursery (part 1): The Nursery Is the Front Door to Family Ministry

Most kids pastors and directors spend the majority of their focus on elementary, and I get it.
That’s where the obvious “ministry moments” happen. Teaching. Worship. Big engagement. Big decisions.
But if you’re leading kids ministry, you’re not just an elementary director.
You’re the kids director over every age group.
And I’ve come to believe something that surprises people when I say it out loud:
Nursery may be the most important area in your entire kids ministry.
Not because babies can understand your lesson plan.
Not because the nursery room is the most exciting place in the building.
Because of what nursery represents to the people walking through your doors.
For many young families, nursery is their first real test of trust.
A first-time mom is anxious to leave her child with someone she doesn’t know.
A dad is scanning the room, checking doors, watching ratios, noticing cleanliness. Another mom—on her fourth child—drops off a three-day-old and practically runs to the sanctuary hoping to catch a breath.
And then there’s the single parent who isn’t sure why they even tried to leave the house today.
They’re tired -no, they’re exhausted. Sleep comes in bite-size chunks. Fear is easy to trigger. Finances can feel tight. Health concerns can linger. Grandparents may be overly involved… or far away. And in the middle of all of it, they’re trying to show up at church and believe God will meet them.
Your nursery team has the opportunity to love that family in a way that feels almost impossible anywhere else.
I saw this clearly years ago while serving at a large church in the Seattle area. The kids pastor I worked for was an incredible communicator in elementary, but what marked him most wasn’t his stage presence, it was how he led every room. He stood at check-in greeting families, then made rounds through every classroom. At first, I assumed he was encouraging volunteers.
But then I watched him go into the nursery and do something that changed my perspective forever. He prayed for every baby. Individually. By name. Hand on their head. A blessing spoken over their life.
And if parents were nearby, he prayed for them too.
He didn’t treat nursery like a necessary inconvenience. He treated it like ministry.
And you could feel the fruit of it.
Parents connected. Volunteers flourished. Relationships formed that lasted beyond that season of life. In a massive church with a lot of moving parts, the core values of the ministry were visible in the nursery more than anywhere else.
That’s when it clicked for me:
A healthy nursery doesn’t just serve babies -it serves families.
And healthy families are the foundation of a healthy church.

And here’s a piece leaders often miss:
Nursery can also be the easiest on-ramp for new volunteers, especially parents.
Not because parents are looking for more to do, but because serving in nursery helps them find their people.
It gives them language for what they’re living.
It gives them a place to ask questions.
And it gives them a sense of purpose beyond simply surviving the week.
More than we need parents to serve, parents need a place to belong.
So if you’ve ever treated nursery as “childcare,” I want to encourage you to reconsider. Nursery isn’t the place you fill with whoever is available.
It’s the front door of family ministry.
And when you get nursery right, you don’t just improve a room.
You strengthen the entire church.
